Neck Pain in Mumbai’s IT Professionals and Office Workers: Causes, Symptoms, and Non-Surgical Treatment Options

From BKC and Lower Parel to Andheri East, Powai, and Navi Mumbai, Mumbai’s professionals spend much of their working day in front of computers and digital devices. Long screen hours, limited movement, and daily commutes can leave the neck feeling stiff, sore, and fatigued.

For many office workers, discomfort begins as an occasional ache. But when it keeps returning, spreads to the shoulders, or interferes with sleep and concentration, it deserves attention. Prolonged screen use and sustained or awkward neck positions may contribute to discomfort, but they do not inevitably cause cervical disc degeneration.

Common Causes of Neck Pain in Desk-Based Professionals

Understanding the possible causes of neck pain, and recognising symptoms that may involve the nerves, is an important first step toward appropriate care.

Cervical Disc Degeneration

The cervical spine consists of vertebrae separated by intervertebral discs that help absorb pressure and allow movement. Over time, these discs may undergo degenerative changes. Some people develop disc bulges or herniations that may irritate nearby nerve roots.

However, disc changes are also common in people without pain. An MRI finding alone does not establish that a disc abnormality is responsible for symptoms.

Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis refers to age-related changes affecting the discs, joints, and other structures of the neck. These changes may include disc wear, joint changes, and bone spurs. In some cases, they contribute to stiffness, pain, or narrowing around nerve roots or the spinal cord.

Although these changes become more common with age, symptoms and their severity vary. Not everyone with cervical spondylosis requires intensive treatment.

“Tech Neck” and Prolonged Screen Use

“Tech neck” is a commonly used term for neck discomfort associated with extended use of phones, laptops, and other digital devices. Looking down at a screen for long periods, working with a poorly positioned monitor, or remaining in one position for hours may increase muscular strain and contribute to discomfort.

Long commutes can add to the challenge. Remaining in a sustained or awkward neck position during travel, followed by another extended period at a desk, may aggravate existing symptoms.

The issue is not simply posture in isolation. Duration of static positions, limited movement, workload, stress, and individual health factors can all influence how the neck feels.

Symptoms: When is Neck Pain More Than Muscle Stiffness?

Neck-related problems can produce symptoms beyond discomfort in the neck itself. Common symptoms include:

  • Neck stiffness or reduced range of motion
  • Pain around the shoulders or upper back
  • Headaches that may accompany neck discomfort
  • Pain travelling from the neck into the shoulder, arm, or hand
  • Tingling, pins and needles sensation, or numbness in the arm or fingers
  • Weakness in the arm or hand

When a cervical nerve root is irritated or compressed, it may cause cervical radiculopathy. Symptoms can include radiating arm pain, altered sensation, and muscle weakness.

These symptoms should not automatically be attributed to long working hours or poor posture. A clinical assessment can help determine whether the cause involves a cervical nerve, muscles, joints, or another condition.

Seek urgent medical care if you develop rapidly worsening weakness, new difficulty with balance or walking, loss of hand coordination, or other sudden neurological changes. These may indicate spinal cord involvement or another condition requiring prompt assessment.

Why Accurate Diagnosis Matters

Persistent neck pain can have several causes, and treatment should be guided by the underlying problem; not simply by where it hurts.

A doctor may begin by reviewing your symptoms, medical history, work habits, and any previous injuries. A physical and neurological examination may assess neck movement, muscle strength, sensation, reflexes, and signs of nerve irritation.

An MRI may be recommended when symptoms persist or neurological signs are present. It can help identify disc herniation, degenerative changes, and possible narrowing around nerves or the spinal cord.

Medication may help manage symptoms in some situations. Ergonomic changes and movement breaks can reduce avoidable strain, while physiotherapy may improve mobility and strength. If symptoms persist or a specific cervical disc or nerve-root condition is identified, a broader, individualised treatment plan may be needed.

This does not mean every disc abnormality requires a surgical intervention. Many people improve with conservative care, and treatment depends on the diagnosis, symptom severity, neurological findings, and individual circumstances.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options at ANSSI Wellness

For working professionals experiencing ongoing neck discomfort, ANSSI Wellness offers a non-surgical approach that may include Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Treatment (NSSDT) and personalised rehabilitation.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Treatment

NSSDT uses a computer-controlled treatment table and harness to apply controlled forces to selected spinal segments. The aim is to reduce mechanical stress around the targeted area.

For certain patients with disc-related conditions, spinal decompression may be considered as part of an individualised treatment plan. However, it is not appropriate for every cause of neck pain. A clinical assessment is essential to determine whether it is suitable.

Physiotherapy and Strengthening

Physiotherapy may help improve neck and shoulder mobility, strengthen supporting muscles, and build tolerance for work-related activities. Exercises should be tailored to the person’s symptoms and clinical findings.

A physiotherapist can also provide guidance on gradually returning to activity and modifying movements that aggravate discomfort.

Ergonomic and Lifestyle Guidance

Practical changes can make the workday more comfortable:

  • Position your screen near eye level and directly in front of you.
  • Keep your keyboard and mouse within comfortable reach.
  • Take regular movement breaks instead of remaining in one position for hours.
  • Adjust your seating and screen setup to reduce sustained neck strain.
  • During commutes, vary your position when possible and avoid prolonged awkward neck postures.

These steps may help manage strain, but they are not substitutes for medical evaluation when symptoms persist or neurological signs appear.
