Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

The spinal canal present in the lower back area is termed the lumbar spinal canal. When there is a narrowing of the lumbar spinal canal, resulting in the nearby nerves getting compressed causing pain & swelling, then the condition is called lumbar spinal stenosis.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Symptoms

Common lumbar spinal stenosis symptoms consist of the following:

  • Pain, weakness/numbness in the buttocks, calves, or legs
  • Persistent cramping in the calves while walking, making it difficult to walk even a short distance in a single go
  • Radiating pain in the thighs & legs
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Loss of functioning of the legs in rare instances
  • Increase in pain on lying down, sitting, or bending forward

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Causes

Even though there is a wide range of lumbar spinal stenosis causes, the most common cause is osteoarthritis. Hence, lumbar spinal stenosis is more common in older adults aged 50 or more. Moreover, research has found women to be more likely to develop spinal stenosis than men.

Causes of lumbar spinal stenosis other than osteoarthritis include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Narrow spinal canal since birth
  • Tumor in the lumbar spinal canal
  • Spine injury due to fall/accident
  • Previous spine surgery
  • Specific bone diseases that cause narrowing of the spinal canal

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Diagnosis

A neurosurgeon usually conducts the lumbar spinal stenosis diagnosis after enquiring about medical history & symptoms, performing a physical examination, and analysing imaging test results.

Following imaging scans may be conducted for diagnosing lumbar spinal stenosis:

  • X-ray
  • MRI
  • CT scan or CAT scan
  • Myelogram
